Buried somewhere between huge imposing glass buildings, hiding behind all the chains, franchises and all too familiar shops, restaurants and cafes, lies a small reminder of what London once was, Borough Market.
This bustling little corner of London, harmonising with the occasional train rumbling overhead, is not only a great way to support small family businesses who have long been priced out of the high street, but also the perfect place for a family day out. The trick is to be an early bird; the rare haven it is, by the afternoon Borough Market becomes very congested and rather stressful. Any time before 11am is ideal if you want to be able to amble around without feeling like you’re one step away from falling pregnant by a complete stranger.
Whether it’s fresh ingredients for tonight’s supper you’re looking for…
…or something a little more indulgent, Borough has it all. You name it, it’ll probably be there.
One of the best bits is that there are tasters on every corner, so you really do get to try a little bit of everything- make sure you go hungry! The spicy venison sausage was a clear winner , and made it home with us!
How pretty are these mushrooms? There’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! Don’t they look like something straight out of an Enid Blyton fairytale?
Little Gracie adored being allowed to walk around freely, and it was only when he saw the ice-cream stand that he came cuddling up to my legs and looking up at me all doe-eyed… How could I resist?
Don’t go thinking that it’s just food, either; Borough is adorned with beautiful little flower and home trinket stalls, perfect for the home-maker.
When our bellies could take no more (sob – one of those occasions where you wish you had a bottomless stomach!), and we were all in need of an afternoon nap, we said goodbye to Borough Market…
… until next time.
